Dissertation
Recycling of cemented carbides is carried out via the zinc process. The first stage of which takes place at temperatures between 900–1000 °C Since metallic zinc evaporates at 907 °C, a possibility exists that the reaction with the Co-binder between the tungsten carbides occurs with liquid or gaseous zinc or with a mixture of both. For a better understanding of the phase formation between the disintegrant and the binder material, as a strong simplification pure cobalt is used instead of WC Co carbides. In this way, trends derived from this basic data can be applied later and possible influences of several hard material components can be excluded. The aim of this dissertation is the finding of an experimental setup that allows the contacting of cobalt with pure gaseous zinc. With this, influences of temperature, duration, Zn:Co ratio and pressure can be investigated more detailed.
